About Heather
As well as almost certainly being one of Britain's
most experienced rug makers and teachers of rug-making,
Heather has an unrivalled understanding of the technique
in all its forms and applications, an infectious enthusiasm
and limitless patience.

International renown
A former social worker and occupational therapist,
Heather's experience of working with a very wide variety of
'clients' is particularly relevant. In the UK, she runs workshops
for inmates at Durham Prison, teaches rug-making in schools
to children age 5 upwards, and leads weekly sessions for people
with special needs and learning difficulties at Clayport Library,
Durham. She has won international renown, teaching rug-making
in rural communities in India and East Africa, in Australia
and across the USA, including the Green Mountain Rug School
in Vermont.
Shades of Heather
Heather teaches rug making and dyeing of materials
in her workshop, 'Shades of Heather', to an enthusiastic new
generation of crafters and her annual rug-making 'retreat',
which she runs in the North Yorkshire Dales, attracts rug
makers from all over the world. She has featured in a number
of TV documentaries and her rugs appear regularly in international
craft publications and books. Her work, including commissions
by the celebrated artist MacKenzie Thorpe, has been exhibited
widely.
